Memphis, TN
Recently, AWG Cares provided a grant request in the amount of $2,500 to Alpha Omega Veterans Services in Memphis, TN. The grant request was submitted by Karen Parson, VMC Memphis employee.
Alpha Omega Veterans Services (AOVS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee that assists military veterans to reintegrate into society, often after achieving recovery and rehabilitation from debilitating mental and physical conditions. Established in 1987 by a Memphis mother of 2 sons who returned from the Vietnam War suffering from what is now called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); after finding no help for her children, she started Alpha Omega as one of the first independent organizations in the United States that specialized in providing supportive services to military veterans.
AOVS has three locations, but Karen believes the most amazing is the south Memphis site. The community is a wondrous mecca of herbs, vegetable gardens, beehives, and a chicken coop. The housing units are nestled in the background of the landscaped property. The veterans are tilling and maintaining the gardens and finding solace and purpose. They also sell their greenery at the downtown farmers market on Saturdays. Karen wants to give special thanks to Mr. Cordell Walker, who has passionately served for 34 years as the Executive Director of AOVS, and Ms. Vicki Azlin, AOVS administrative assistant, for the outreach and publicity that she provides.
Thank you, Karen, for donating to AWG Cares and submitting this grant request!
